Malaysia’s hot and humid climate can be challenging for people with eczema. Heat, sweating, friction and outdoor allergens may trigger itching, redness and irritation in sensitive skin.
Although humidity may help some people experience less dryness, excessive sweating can leave salt on the skin and aggravate eczema. A gentle routine can help protect the skin barrier and reduce recurring flare-ups.
Keep Your Skin Cool
Heat can increase itching and sweating. To stay comfortable:
- Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing
- Avoid tight or rough fabrics
- Use a fan or air conditioning when needed
- Exercise during cooler times of the day
- Change out of damp clothes promptly
When outdoors, try to stay in shaded areas and take breaks when your skin begins to feel hot or irritated.
Rinse Away Sweat Gently
After exercise, outdoor work or heavy sweating, take a short shower using lukewarm water.
Avoid scrubbing the skin with loofahs, rough towels or exfoliating gloves. Gently pat the skin dry, leaving it slightly damp before applying moisturiser.
Short showers lasting approximately five to ten minutes may help prevent further dryness.
Moisturise Every Day
Eczema weakens the skin barrier, allowing moisture to escape more easily. Regular moisturising helps reduce dryness and provides additional protection against irritants.
Use a fragrance-free cream or ointment rather than a light lotion when your skin is very dry. Apply it:
- Immediately after bathing
- After washing your hands
- Whenever the skin feels dry or itchy
- Before entering a strongly air-conditioned environment
Continue moisturising even when your eczema appears calm.
Choose Fragrance-Free Products
Perfume, essential oils and fragranced skincare may irritate eczema-prone skin. Select gentle cleansers, moisturisers and laundry products labelled fragrance-free.
“Unscented” does not always mean fragrance-free, as fragrance ingredients may still be used to cover other smells. Test new products on a small area before applying them widely.
Be Careful With Air Conditioning
Air conditioning provides relief from heat, but spending long periods in cool, dry air may increase skin dryness.
Keep moisturiser nearby and apply it when your skin feels tight or uncomfortable. Avoid allowing cold air to blow directly onto affected areas for long periods.
Identify Your Personal Triggers
Eczema triggers vary between individuals. Common triggers may include:
- Heat and sweat
- Dust and pollen
- Fragranced products
- Detergents
- Stress
- Rough clothing
- Frequent contact with water
- Certain workplace chemicals
Keeping a simple diary of your activities, products and flare-ups may help identify patterns.
When to Seek Medical Care
Arrange a medical consultation when eczema:
- Frequently interrupts sleep
- Continues to spread
- Becomes painful or severely itchy
- Does not improve with moisturising
- Keeps returning despite avoiding triggers
- Develops blisters, yellow crusts or weeping
- Affects your daily activities or confidence
Medical treatment may include prescribed anti-inflammatory creams or other therapies based on the type and severity of eczema. Treatment should be individualised rather than copied from another person’s prescription.
