Sensitive and eczema-prone skin can react easily to weather changes, fragrances, harsh cleansers and complicated skincare routines.
The goal of an eczema-friendly routine is not to use as many products as possible. It is to cleanse gently, replace lost moisture and avoid ingredients that may trigger irritation.
Morning Routine
1. Cleanse Only When Necessary
Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid strong soaps, facial scrubs, cleansing brushes and alcohol-based products.
If your skin is extremely dry, you may not need to use a cleanser every morning unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
2. Apply Prescribed Treatment
During an eczema flare, apply any prescribed cream according to your doctor’s instructions.
Do not use another person’s medication or continue strong topical treatment longer than recommended. Different areas of the body may require different treatment strengths.
3. Apply Moisturiser
Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while the skin is still slightly damp. Creams and ointments generally hold more moisture than light lotions and may be more suitable for eczema-prone skin.
4. Use Suitable Sun Protection
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that is suitable for sensitive skin.
Test the product on a small area before applying it to the whole face or body, particularly if your skin often reacts to new products.
Evening Routine
1. Take a Short, Lukewarm Shower
Hot water can remove natural oils and worsen dryness. Keep showers short and avoid rubbing the skin.
Use your hands rather than a rough sponge or loofah.
2. Pat the Skin Dry
Gently pat your skin with a soft towel. Do not rub it completely dry.
3. Apply Treatment and Moisturiser
Use prescribed treatment as directed, followed by your moisturiser. When using an emollient and another topical medicine, follow your healthcare professional’s instructions regarding application order and timing.
What Should You Look for in Skincare Products?
Products for sensitive and eczema-prone skin should ideally be:
- Fragrance-free
- Gentle and non-abrasive
- Free from unnecessary essential oils
- Easy to apply consistently
- Appropriate for the affected area
Do not assume that products described as “natural,” “organic” or “herbal” are automatically gentle. Botanical extracts and essential oils may still cause irritation or allergic reactions.
Introduce Products Slowly
Using several new products at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of a reaction.
Before using a new product widely, apply a small amount to the inner arm daily for seven to ten days. Stop using it if you develop itching, swelling, burning or a rash.
Products and Habits to Avoid
Sensitive and eczema-prone skin may become irritated by:
- Physical scrubs
- Strong exfoliating acids
- Fragranced body washes
- Undiluted essential oils
- Very hot water
- Rough towels
- Frequent product switching
- Picking or scratching affected skin
A simple routine used consistently is usually better than following every new skincare trend.
When Your Routine Is Not Enough
Seek professional care when your skin remains itchy, painful, cracked or inflamed despite following a gentle routine.
You should also arrange an assessment if the skin begins to weep, develops yellow crusts, becomes warm or increasingly painful, as these may be signs of infection.
